Where did the chocolate milk river go?
“The North Saskatchewan River looks less like chocolate milk than usual.” States Wallis Snowdon from CBC News. The natural water highway that makes it way through Edmonton has turned from its traditional colour of brown to a clear blue. People have been calling it “picture perfect”. The increase of glacier melting and the release of water from the Bighorn Dam, 330 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, has caused the famous brown hue of the North Saskatchewan River to turn into a more pleasing blue colour. The water, which flows through the Rocky Mountains, then pools and mixes with other, cleaner and debris-free water in reservoirs and then finally makes its way across the river valley. The river has finally cleared up enough to see to the bottom! This invites more citizens to enjoy the adventurous activities that the North Saskatchewan River provides, including canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, as well as other activities around the river, like hiking! Take advantage of this rare Edmontonian miracle while it lasts! Experts are saying that it will be gone by next summer. While taking on a new adventure on the river you can see all the species of fish swimming below you, as well as the rocks and new blooming environments! The new icy blue tinge of the water has let us peer into a world previously hidden right under our noses! Showing us all sorts of treasures and trinkets, and some not-so-nice garbage including discarded bikes and shopping carts, watches, phones, rings, old cans, and bottles. Don’t worry though! We are making an effort to clean up the river with this new ability to see clearly through the river! This all starts with the people of Edmonton not throwing trash into the river and other drains.
